To assist the medical technologist in performing a variety of tests in one or more areas of work, such as hematology, immunology, or toxicology, for use by physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of patients.
Essential Functions? Perform chemical, bacteriological, serological, or microscopic laboratory test procedures on specimens in one laboratory section.
Perform quality control to ensure proper functioning of instrumentation reagents, and procedures.
Recognize instrument malfunctions and abnormal test results and take corrective action.
Calibrate, standardize, and maintain instruments following established procedures.
Prepare reagents, standards, and controls according to prescribed procedures.
Validate, review, and report results of tests performed.
Assist in training students and new staff members in laboratory tests and procedures.
Perform tests requiring routine and/or complex instrumentation such as optical, photometric, fluorometric, electronic, automated, and scintillation.
Research and develop new medical laboratory procedures as assigned.
Dispose of or properly handle biological, radioactive, and/or hazardous waste in a manner that is consistent with laboratory, university, state, and federal government policy.
Participate in the ordering activities for supplies, materials, and equipment as needed.
Perform related work as assigned.
May complete unit/department specific duties and expectations as outlined in department documents.
Supervision Received? Supervision is received from a Laboratory Supervisor or from a designated individual.
Supervision Exercised? Functional supervision may be exercised over technical and service support staff when designated by departmental supervisory staff.
Required Qualifications? One of the following:
Degree from an accredited Medical Laboratory Technician program; or Associate's degree in chemistry, biology, or physics and two (2) years of experience in a medical laboratory area; or Associates degree in chemistry, biology, or physics and completion of a military laboratory training program of at least one (1) year duration; or Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, or physics.
Preferred Qualifications? Additional license/certification requirements as determined by the hiring department.

The performance of these physical demands is an essential function of the job.
This position is very active and requires ambulating, reaching, and moving objects weighing up to and over 20 lbs.
This role also routinely comes into contact with patients who may have contagious illnesses.
This position is in a health care facility open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Rotating shifts as well as holiday and work during inclement weather will be required.
